Japan’s experimental quick breeder reactor passes screening for restart

TOKYO, Jul 27 (NHK) –
Japan’s nuclear regulators have finalized a doc which certifies that an experimental reactor for growing quick breeder reactors has handed screening for a restart.

Joyo in Oarai Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, is a small reactor used to conduct experiments for quick breeder reactors that use plutonium extracted from spent nuclear gasoline.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority drafted a doc in May saying that Joyo’s security measures meet authorities laws launched after the 2011 accident on the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear energy plant.

The authority solicited public feedback on the draft, and the outcomes have been reported at Wednesday’s common assembly.

Some feedback solid doubt on the technical functionality of the reactor’s operator, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, however the authority gave Joyo the go-ahead.

Joyo started operation in 1977, however was halted after an accident in 2007.
