BEIJING, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) — World No. 1 paddlers Fan Zhendong and Sun Yingsha of China have been invited to participate in the 2022 Asian Cup, as the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU) released the tournament’s prospectus on Monday.
The tournament will take place between November 17 and 19 in Bangkok, Thailand, featuring 16 players apiece across men’s and women’s singles events.
The invited participants include the 2019 Asian Cup winners, the singles champions of the 2021 Asian Championships, the top nine players from ITTF Week 36 world rankings, a host representative, and four regional representatives, one each from South Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia and West Asia, with a maximum of two players from any member association.
Four Chinese paddlers are among the invitees, namely 2019 Asian Cup winners Fan Zhendong and Zhu Yuling, men’s world No. 2 and Grand Slam winner Ma Long, and women’s world No. 1 Sun Yingsha.
2021 Asian champions Lee Sangsu of South Korea and Hina Hayata of Japan are also invited to the continental competition. Other prominent names including Hayata’s fellow Japanese Tomokazu Harimoto and Mima Ito.
According to the prospectus, the event will be played in a single knockout system with all matches to be played in a best-of-seven format.
The ATTU said that entries should be submitted by member associations no later than September 30.
