The firefly squid fishery is at its peak in Shinonsen, Hyogo Prefecture, because the small bioluminescent squid, a seasonal delicacy of the Sea of Japan, is being hauled in.
Before daybreak, firefly squid are introduced ashore in Styrofoam containers at Hamasaka Port, considered one of Japan’s main squid fishing hubs. Known because the ‘jewel of the ocean’ for his or her blue-white glow when sensing hazard, the firefly squid caught in Hyogo measure about 5 centimeters in size and are prized for his or her agency, springy texture.
Once landed, the squid are instantly auctioned, then boiled at close by processing crops earlier than being shipped primarily to the Kansai area, together with Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe. The firefly squid fishing season is predicted to proceed till late May.
