Beautifully marbled uncooked meat from a fin whale—also known as the king of whales—caught within the Sea of Okhotsk was auctioned on June third at a wholesale market in Fukuoka City. This marked the primary public sale of uncooked fin whale meat in Kyushu for the reason that resumption of economic whaling in Japan.
The public sale passed off at 3 a.m. on the central wholesale market in Chūō Ward, Fukuoka, that includes rows of wealthy purple whale meat. Around 20 seafood wholesalers participated, bidding on roughly 100 kilograms of high-end cuts. Every portion was efficiently auctioned off.
The highest bid reached 30,000 yen per kilogram. A purchaser commented, “It’s rare, and as you can see, the balance of fat and muscle is excellent. The true test will be how well it sells to customers.”
A reporter who had by no means eaten whale earlier than sampled a slice and remarked, “It’s sweet, with absolutely no gamey smell. The balance of lean and fat is perfect—it’s really delicious.”
