Japan cracks down on ‘1 yen smartphones’

TOKYO, Dec 27 (News On Japan) –
The Japanese authorities on Wednesday carried out tighter laws on widespread “1 yen smartphone” presents, partly to stem their resale in overseas markets.

One buyer, who managed to buy 5 telephones for the household, commented, “We grabbed this last opportunity to get new phones for practically one yen. It’s a deal for the whole family, five units in total, including one for my grandmother.”

Another, who purchased a cellphone for his or her baby, expressed the urgency, “We were told it would be impossible from tomorrow, so we had to hurry.”

Smartphone costs had been closely discounted by means of mixed presents with Internet service contracts and extra reductions on the handset, not ruled by present laws. However, ranging from Dec 27, such aggressive discounting practices shall be prohibited beneath the brand new laws.

The coverage change goals to counter the resale of the telephones in overseas markets at a lot increased costs.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications anticipates that “excessive discounts on devices will be curbed” with these new laws.
