NEW DELHI, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) — The authorities of India’s northeastern state of Assam will interact 250,000 volunteers as water messengers to create consciousness on water preservation and associated points, state-run broadcaster All India Radio (AIR) reported on Sunday.
According to Kailash Karthik, director of Jal Jeevan (water life) mission in Assam, college students from ninth to tenth grade can be assigned as water messengers regionally referred to as Jal Doot.
“Ten students of 9th to 10th standard would be engaged as Jal Doot against each scheme of the mission. The selected students would undergo a two-day workshop on water, sanitation and health along with community engagement,” Karthik was quoted by the broadcaster as saying.
“The selected students will go to the field to know about the working mechanism of the pipe water supply system.”
In 2019, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched an formidable Jal Jeevan (Water Life) Mission, promising a purposeful faucet connection to all households in rural India by 2024.
The scheme was envisioned to supply protected and enough consuming water to all households in rural India.
Karthik stated water messengers would even be given subject check kits to watch the water high quality.
“Jal Doots would also interact with various people of the community on issues like climate change and water conservation efforts, and record all the things in the Jal Doot diary,” the mission director stated.
“Through this initiative, there is hope that a number of climate-aware children will be able to work for the betterment of the community.”
