YOKOHAMA –
Yokohama Mayor Takeharu Yamanaka resigned on September 7 after the town meeting unanimously authorized his request to step down over allegations of office energy harassment, setting the stage for a mayoral election in October.
The Yokohama City Assembly voted on Yamanaka’s resignation request, with all 84 members supporting his departure.
Assembly Chairman Tadanori Watanabe introduced the outcome, saying, “Total votes: 84. Votes in favor: 84. Therefore, it has been decided to approve the resignation.”
The unanimous vote formally cleared the best way for Yamanaka to go away workplace on September 7.
A mayoral election will now be held to decide on his successor.
The election can be formally introduced on October 4, with voting and poll counting scheduled for October 18.
