The Japan Business Federation (Keidanren) has launched a proposal in search of the modification of the present legislation that mandates married {couples} to decide on one surname upon marriage.

Masakazu Tokura, chairman of Keidanren, said, ‘Considering societal and international developments and the development of ladies in Japan, we should push ahead. We hope for swift discussions on this matter. This proposal displays that want.’

Under the present legislation, {couples} are required to unify their surnames upon marriage, with 95% of {couples} choosing the husband’s surname.

This has led to criticism that the burden of inconvenience and drawback as a consequence of title adjustments disproportionately falls on girls, prompting Keidanren to advocate for authorized reform.

According to a Keidanren survey, 91% of corporations enable staff to make use of their maiden names informally. However, points incessantly come up, comparable to the shortcoming to make use of casual names on contracts.
