Observations by the Earthquake Research Institute of the University of Tokyo have revealed that an eruption occurred off the coast of Iwo Jima within the Ogasawara Islands in October, and a considerable amount of rock was piled up, forming a brand new island. Experts level out that “a phreatomagmatic explosion,” through which seawater comes into direct contact with high-temperature magma, is happening, and so long as the eruption continues, the island is prone to develop.
