Myanmar tribunal sentences Japanese documentary maker to jail

BANGKOK, Oct 06 (Nikkei) –
A Myanmar army tribunal on Wednesday sentenced Japanese video journalist Toru Kubota to seven years in jail for violating the digital transactions legislation and three years for incitement, in accordance with diplomatic sources.

Kubota had entered Myanmar in mid-July to shoot a documentary. He was detained by safety forces in Yangon on July 30 after recording protests towards the nation’s army regime.

The Myanmar army says that Kubota entered the nation on a vacationer visa and communicated with protest organizers. Court deliberations proceed on prices of immigration legislation violations.
