Hosts Uzbekistan claim first gold at Tashkent Judo Worlds

TASHKENT, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) — Uzbekistan and Croatia took a gold medal each on the fifth day of the 2022 Judo World Championships on Monday.

In the men’s -90kg final, Uzbekistan’s Davlat Bobonov neutralized Christian Parlati of Italy, getting the first medal for Uzbekistan.

Olympic champion Lasha Bekauri from Georgia and his teammate Luka Maisuradze took bronze medals in the category.

27-year-old Croatian judoka Barbara Matic dominated in the women’s -70kg after forcing her teammate Lara Cvjetko into submission to secure her second world title.

Sanne Van Dijke of the Netherland and Japan’s Saki Niizoe shared third place in the category.

Japan led the medal tally with five golds, followed by Mongolia and Croatia, while hosts Uzbekistan jumped to sixth.

The Judo World Championships concludes on Thursday.
