Fujitsu is supporting the development of Toyota Gazoo Racing’s new video analysis system, using its advanced AI technology. The system made its debut at the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps racing event, held from April 27 to 29 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.

Fujitsu’s sponsorship of Toyota Gazoo Racing, a participant in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), began in 2022, during which it supported the creation of a video data analysis system. This system, harnessing Fujitsu’s AI technology, enables Toyota Gazoo Racing to adapt to evolving racing conditions based on real-time video data from vehicle-mounted cameras. The system is set to be implemented in the upcoming 24 Hours of Le Mans event in France from June 7 to 11.

In motorsports, Fujitsu is committed to developing technologies that enhance team performance, enrich the viewing experience for fans, boost audience engagement, and promote sustainable race management. The insights and technology gained through this collaboration will further be employed to foster a safer transportation society and smarter cities.

Toyota Gazoo Racing, competing in the top-tier “Hypercar” class in the FIA WEC, has been increasingly reliant on data-driven strategies to optimize performance and win races. Despite the wealth of real-time data from hundreds of sensors mounted on vehicles, the previous approach still depended heavily on time-consuming data reviews and video analysis.

The newly developed video data analysis program, powered by Fujitsu’s AI technology, revolutionizes this approach. It allows race crews to rapidly assess and adapt racing strategies according to changing race conditions, where victory often hinges on split-second decisions and immediate adaptation to emerging challenges.

The AI-optimized program provides real-time video data analysis from in-vehicle cameras, offering critical insights into the immediate surroundings of the vehicle. Fujitsu has further fine-tuned the AI’s configuration parameters to ensure reliable video analysis under diverse conditions, including at night and during poor weather, thereby enhancing Toyota Gazoo Racing’s strategic capabilities during endurance races like the FIA WEC.
