At round 11:37 pm Japan time on the 2nd, there was a big magnitude 7.7 earthquake with its epicenter close to Mindanao Island within the Philippines. The Japan Meteorological Agency says the depth of the epicenter is unknown.

Due to this earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory for the Pacific coast from the Miyakojima/Yaeyama area to Chiba Prefecture.

At 3:12 a.m. on the third, a 20cm tsunami was noticed in Kominato, Amami Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture, and the Japan Meteorological Agency additionally issued a tsunami advisory for the Amami Islands and Tokara Islands.
