Cormorant Fishing Marks Arrival of Early Summer in Southern Japan

FUKUOKA, May 20 (News On Japan) –
Traditional ukai cormorant fishing, a seasonal customized signaling the arrival of early summer time, started on May twentieth alongside the Chikugo River in Asakura, Fukuoka Prefecture, following the opening of ayu sweetfish fishing on the river that flows by southern Fukuoka.

An indication for native officers and associated events was held on the opening day. Although no ayu have been caught, loud cheers rose from spectators at nightfall because the grasp fisherman skillfully managed six cormorants on the river.

A river-opening Shinto ceremony was additionally carried out, with members praying for security all through the fishing season.
