WTA roundup: U.S. teen Ashlyn Krueger reaches Japan Open semis

Ashlyn Krueger, a 19-year-old Dallas resident ranked No. 123 on the earth, reached her first profession WTA semifinal Friday when she defeated Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya 6-3, 6-1 on the Japan Open in Osaka.

Krueger uncorked 11 aces to Kalinskaya’s two and saved all three break factors she confronted. She gained 29 of her 35 first-service factors (82.9 p.c).

Krueger, who upset eighth seed Kateryna Baindl of Ukraine within the first spherical, has but to drop a set on this match. Her semifinal opponent shall be Mai Hontama of Japan, who rallied to defeat Dutch opponent Arianne Hartono 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-1.

The different semifinal will pit Chinese natives Lin Zhu and Xinyu Wang, the primary and third seeds, respectively. Zhu eased previous American Elizabeth Mandlik 6-3, 6-2 within the quarters, and Wang bought previous No. 6 seed Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 7-6 (4), 6-7 (1), 6-3 in two hours and 51 minutes.

San Diego Open

Fourth-seeded Barbora Krejcikova got here from behind to beat the United States’ Danielle Collins 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 within the semifinals at San Diego.

After dropping the primary set, Krejcikova misplaced her serve to open the second set. However, she instantly broke again, then sealed the set by breaking within the ultimate sport. Collins misplaced her serve twice early within the third set and could not catch up.

Krejcikova is in search of the seventh WTA Tour title of her profession, having most just lately captured the championship at Dubai in March.

Her final-round opponent would be the winner of the Friday evening all-U.S. semifinal that includes Sofia Kenin and Emma Navarro.
