Leylah Fernandez of Canada fought off a problem from 18-year-old qualifier Tereza Valentova to win the Japan Open 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 in Osaka on Sunday.
In the early going, it appeared the fourth-seeded Fernandez would cruise to a simple triumph after successful the primary seven video games of the match. But Valentova, in her first WTA closing, got here up with a service break late within the second set to ship the match to a 3rd set.
The younger Czech, serving to tie the decider at 4-4, was damaged for the seventh time on the match, giving Fernandez a 5-3 lead that Valentova couldn’t overcome within the two-hour, 11-minute match.
