On June 23, 2025, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers on the Calgary International Airport have been conducting outbound exams once they intercepted baggage destined for Narita, Japan. The baggage, which had been flagged for abnormalities, was discovered to include roughly 30 kg of methamphetamine hid inside its contents. The traveler had already boarded their outbound flight when CBSA border providers officers intervened, arresting and eradicating the person from the plane with out incident.
The Integrated Border Enforcement Team (IBET) in Alberta, a joint pressure operation between the RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region, CBSA and Calgary Police Service, was notified, and a legal investigation was initiated into the traveler and the seized medicine.
Mariane Lee (18), a resident of Winnipeg, Man., was arrested and charged with:
- Possession for the aim of exporting opposite to part 6(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;
- Possession of a managed substance for the aim of trafficking opposite to part 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act; and,
- Attempting to export items which might be prohibited, managed or regulated opposite to part 160 of the Customs Act.
Lee is scheduled to look on the Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary on July 28, 2025.
