Texas DA calls officers ‘heroes,’ denies prosecution rumors after Austin mass capturing

AUSTIN, Texas — Travis County District Attorney José Garza is pushing again towards on-line rumors stating his workplace plans to file prison expenses towards three Austin cops who fatally shot a person throughout a lethal mass capturing outdoors a downtown bar.

In an announcement issued Tuesday, Garza referred to as the officers “heroes” and stated the claims are false, based on the Austin American-Statesman.

“These officers are heroes, and it should go without saying that my office is not seeking any charges and would not seek charges,” Garza stated. “The accounts to the contrary are false, intentionally false, and are being peddled for obvious political purposes.”

The assertion comes after claims circulated on X that Garza would pursue prison expenses as soon as the Austin Police Department completes its investigation into the officers’ actions.

Attorney Doug O’Connell stated the Austin Police Association had requested his crew to signify the three officers concerned within the March 1 capturing.

“The Austin Police Association has asked my team to represent the 3 heroes that took down the terrorist killer who attacked our community,” O’Connell wrote on X. “Unfortunately they will face a Grand Jury hearing — as is the process directed to the Travis County DA by the Wren Collective. We will be with them every step of the way.”

O’Connell didn’t elaborate on how the Wren Collective influences district lawyer coverage.

In a reply to a different publish questioning the necessity for a grand jury overview, O’Connell added:

“Sad but true, in Austin the Wren Collective requires the DA to have a Grand Jury consider charges every time a police officer uses force. And the DA completely controls the Grand Jury & decides what evidence they see and what they’re prohibited from seeing.”

The claims gained traction on-line and drew responses from a number of Texas leaders, together with Gov. Greg Abbott.

“Whatever the DA does, I will have the final say in the fate of these police officers,” Abbott wrote on X, referencing the claims.

Garza has not publicly said that any outdoors group directs his workplace’s grand jury procedures.

Under Austin Police Department protocol, officer-involved shootings are investigated for potential prison conduct. Since taking workplace in 2021, Garza has maintained a coverage of presenting all officer-involved capturing circumstances to a grand jury, the American-Statesman experiences.

While the district lawyer decides whether or not to current a case, the grand jury determines whether or not prison expenses are warranted.

Garza’s assertion didn’t make clear whether or not this case will nonetheless be offered to a grand jury in accordance with that coverage, regardless of his workplace stating it won’t search expenses.

What is the Wren Collective?

The Wren Collective is a coverage group based in 2020 that describes itself as a crew of former public defenders and coverage specialists who help elected officers, grassroots advocates and allied organizations on coverage growth, implementation and messaging technique, based on its web site.

According to the group, Wren focuses on what it calls “narrative change” round crime and public security, with an emphasis on lowering reliance on the prison authorized system and addressing what it describes as root causes of crime.

Wren started as a restricted legal responsibility firm in 2020 and launched its nonprofit arm in 2021. Its workers consists of attorneys working throughout the nation.
