SHIZUOKA, Apr 21 (News On Japan) –
Service on the Suruga Bay Ferry, which connects Shimizu Port in Shizuoka City and Toi Port in Izu, Shizuoka Prefecture, resumed on April 18th after a suspension of about three months.
The new ferry terminal has been established contained in the “Kashi no Ichi Ichibakan” constructing, only a three-minute stroll from JR Shimizu Station. The terminal is now related to the station by a pedestrian deck, considerably enhancing accessibility.
A brand new terminal opened at Shimizu Port, drawing massive crowds on its first day.
Passengers welcomed the change, saying, “I used to board from much farther away, so it’s great that it’s closer now,” and “I’m looking forward to the view of the sea and Toi Port. I hope I can see Mt. Fuji.”
The ferry had been out of service since January 2025 resulting from injury to the floating platform that connects the ferry to the dock.
Yamamoto, Executive Director of Fujisan Suruga Bay Ferry, commented, “Since Shimizu Station is a hub connecting railways and the sea, we aim to work together with local stakeholders to make this area a gateway to the western coast of the Izu Peninsula—a place where people can gather, shop, and rest.”
With no clear timeline for the platform’s restore, the ferry will briefly function by having passengers board and disembark instantly from the pier. However, resulting from restricted house on the dock, autos similar to buses, automobiles, and bikes aren’t permitted. For the time being, the service can be restricted to pedestrians and bicycles.
