Popular Hokkaido Mountain Reopens After Bear Scare

HOKKAIDO
All mountain climbing trails on Mount Rausu in jap Hokkaido reopened on July 16, one week after a descending hiker was chased by a bear.

The restrictions had been lifted on all routes, together with the Iwaobetsu and Rausu Onsen programs.

The trails had been closed since July 9, when a bear pursued a hiker who was descending the mountain.

The city of Shari stated it determined to reopen the paths after two area surveys discovered no bears displaying habits comparable to following individuals and no new indicators of bear exercise.

A deadly bear assault occurred on Mount Rausu in August 2025, and the city continues to induce hikers to keep away from climbing alone, carry bear spray and take different security precautions.
