Kyoto’s Traditional Pest Control Method: Removing Pine Wrappings as Insects Awaken

KYOTO, Mar 05 (News On Japan) –
In Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture, employees are finishing up the annual removing of straw mats wrapped round pine bushes.

On March 4th, at Sandanike Park in Fukuchiyama, roughly 100 pine bushes across the pond had their protecting mats eliminated.

This conventional pest management technique entails wrapping pines with straw mats throughout winter to draw dangerous bugs that trigger pine wilt illness. As the bugs start to maneuver with the arrival of Keichitsu, the mats are eliminated and burned to exterminate them.

As employees unwrapped the mats, dormant bugs emerged from inside.

Nishigaki Ryosuke of the Fukuchiyama City Silver Human Resources Center commented:

“We capture and eliminate pests as they start moving during this season, contributing to the beautification of Sandanike Park.”

The eliminated mats, together with the bugs inside, are then incinerated.
