Kashima Shrine Holds Once-in-12-Years Ofune Festival

IBARAKI
Kashima Shrine in Kashima, Ibaraki Prefecture, held its Ofune Festival on September 2, with a spectacular fleet of greater than 100 brightly adorned boats crusing alongside rivers and throughout lakes in a convention staged as soon as each 12 years throughout the Year of the Horse.

The pageant, a serious periodic celebration on the shrine, reworked the waterways of the area into a colourful procession as spectators lining the riverbanks cheered the passing fleet.

The Ofune Festival is a convention stated to have been handed down for about 1,700 years and is thought to be one of many largest ceremonial spectacles within the space’s historic community of rivers and lakes.
