Japan eyes revamping tax-free purchasing rule to stem illicit resale

Japan is contemplating overhauling its tax-free purchasing scheme for international guests in response to a rising variety of instances of tax-free objects being resold abroad for revenue at tax-inclusive costs, sources near the matter stated Monday.

At current, guests who keep in Japan for lower than six months should buy merchandise with the consumption tax already deducted. The authorities is now contemplating shifting to a scheme the place they pay tax-inclusive costs and apply for refunds afterward, the sources stated.
