Japan Aquarium begins joint research on sea turtle migration

NAGOYA, Japan, twentieth August, 2023 (WAM) – An aquarium in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, has begun a joint research with overseas analysis establishments to uncover the mechanism behind the migration of loggerhead sea turtles within the Pacific Ocean, Jiji Press reported on Sunday.

Little is understood concerning the precise route and mechanism of the endangered loggerhead’s migration from the coat of Japan, the place the turtles hatch, to the west coast of North America.

In the venture, 100 satellite-tagged juvenile loggerheads will likely be launched into the ocean over 4 years. The first batch of 25 turtles, which had been across the age of two years, was launched into waters to the north of Hawaii final month.

It is the second time that the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium takes half in a loggerhead migration monitoring research. Previously, it launched some 230 juvenile loggerheads from the coast of Japan and different places as a part of a venture

performed from 1997 to 2013.

Most of the turtles traveled to the central North Pacific Ocean on the Kuroshio Current flowing alongside Japan’s east coast, however solely six had been confirmed to have reached the west coast of North America, due partly to the restricted battery lifetime of transmitters, which lasted for less than a couple of yr.
