HAKODATE, Feb 01 (News On Japan) –
In December 2023, Hakodate, Hokkaido witnessed an uncommon phenomenon: the shores have been inundated with an unlimited variety of sardines. Following this incident, one other peculiar discovery has been made on the similar location—this time, it is an intensive quantity of fish bones and scales.
The space blanketed with these marine remnants is the coast of Hamacho in Hakodate City. City officers confirmed the discover on January 4th.
During the occasion in December 2023, it was estimated that 1000’s of tons of sardines had beached themselves on this coastal stretch. Although efforts have been made to gather a few of the stranded fish, a good portion remained within the sea or on the shore.
It’s believed that the sardines that died close to the coast naturally decomposed, forsaking solely bones and scales. These stays have been then washed ashore, creating the fishy graveyard found by the town workers.
