Gion Festival’s Historic Lottery Ceremony Decides Parade Order

KYOTO, Jul 03 (News On Japan) –
The conventional lottery ceremony figuring out the order of the floats for the Gion Festival, considered one of Japan’s three main festivals, passed off on Tuesday.

The lottery ceremony, which dates again to the Muromachi interval when competitors for the lead place was fierce, determines the order of the Yamaboko parade, a spotlight of the Gion Festival.

Out of the 34 floats, the order of 24 floats, excluding the ten floats with pre-determined positions, is determined by drawing heaps.

For the Saki Matsuri, the Oil Tenjin-yama drew the lead place following the Naginata Hoko, whereas for the Ato Matsuri, Kuroshiyama was chosen to steer.

The Saki Matsuri will happen on July seventeenth, and the Ato Matsuri will happen on the twenty fourth, with the floats parading via the streets of Kyoto.
