Candidate Behind ‘Mini-Skirt Campaign’ Arrested

A physician who ran unsuccessfully within the October Lower House election has been arrested by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police on suspicion of promising marketing campaign employees financial compensation.

Masafumi Tabuchi, 66, who stood as a candidate in Tokyo’s twenty sixth district throughout the October election however did not win a seat, was detained alongside Shigeru Kobayashi, a 37-year-old marketing campaign employee. The pair is suspected of agreeing to pay 4 people for his or her election actions.

According to investigators, Tabuchi and Kobayashi allegedly provided hourly wages of 1,500 yen to the employees, who have been engaged in duties resembling distributing leaflets. Under Japan’s Public Offices Election Law, it’s unlawful to supply or promise cost to marketing campaign employees.

Tabuchi additionally drew consideration on social media by posting pictures of feminine marketing campaign employees distributing leaflets whereas sporting miniskirts.
