US Vice President Harris to Visit DMZ During Visit to South Korea

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris will go to the Demilitarized Zone ((DMZ)) that serves as a buffer between North and South Korea on Thursday.

South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo introduced Harris’ go to to the 250 kilometer lengthy zone Tuesday in Tokyo throughout one-on-one talks earlier than they attended the funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Prime Minister Han mentioned the U.S. vp’s go to “will be very symbolic demonstrations” of Washington’s “strong commitments to the security and peace on the Korean Peninsula.”

A U.S. official informed reporters Harris “will reflect on the shared sacrifice of tens of thousands of American and Korean soldiers who fought and died together” throughout the 1950-53 battle that pitted communist North Korea in opposition to the U.S.-backed South. The official mentioned her go to “will reaffirm” that the U.S. dedication to South Korea’s protection is “ironclad.”

Harris’ go to comes simply days after North Korea staged one other ballistic missile launch. The White House issued a separate assertion Tuesday saying Harris informed Han the alliance between the United States and South Korea “remains the linchpin of peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific and around the world.”

The U.S. army has about 28,000 troops in South Korea, a remnant of the Nineteen Fifties Korean War, which led to an armistice, not a proper peace treaty.
