Three folks have been arrested in Kyoto on suspicion of working an unlicensed underground banking service for Chinese shoppers, with police believing the group dealt with transactions price about 600 million yen in complete.
The suspects embrace a 56-year-old firm government, Takahashi, from Kyoto’s Ukyo Ward, and a Chinese man and girl.
They are suspected of conducting 12 unlicensed foreign-exchange transactions between 2023 and 2024, exchanging Japanese yen entrusted to them for Chinese yuan with out authorities authorization.
According to police, the group obtained requests from overseas nationals in Japan and accepted Japanese yen from them in money. Yuan was then transferred from financial institution accounts held by Takahashi and the opposite suspects in China to accounts designated by the shoppers.
China restricts the quantity people can remit overseas or obtain from abroad, with the annual restrict equal to about 7.66 million yen.
During voluntary questioning earlier than his arrest, Takahashi reportedly advised investigators that he wanted yen to buy actual property.
