Two Taiwan-born suspects believed to be members of a Taiwanese fraud ring have been arrested on suspicion of utilizing AI-generated movies that includes distinguished figures to defraud a girl in her 80s of 17 million yen.
Police arrested 29-year-old Yang Xinyi and an alleged confederate on July 13 over suspicions that they collected a complete of 17 million yen in money from the girl in 2025.
Investigators consider the group approached the sufferer with a fraudulent funding alternative and confirmed her deepfake movies created with generative synthetic intelligence that made it seem as if well-known figures have been endorsing the funding.
Yang and the opposite suspect allegedly served as money collectors for the scheme. They obtained detailed directions by social media from one other individual, together with messages stating, “About 85 years old. Female. It seems she has a lot of money in her wallet,” “Do not forget to erase the recording device,” and “How much did you receive?”
Both suspects have denied the allegations, telling investigators, “We cannot remember anything about this case.”
