A seasonal spectacle has begun on the Miwasaki coast in Shingu, Wakayama Prefecture, the place tiny male chigogani crabs are rising from their burrows at low tide and rhythmically waving their claws in a motion resembling a dance.
The crabs, whose shells measure solely about 1 centimeter throughout, seem in massive numbers on the uncovered tidal flats annually round this time, elevating and reducing their claws in unison.
