Dozens of Gravestones Vandalized at Former Prison Cemetery

HOKKAIDO, May 05 (News On Japan) –
A complete of 58 gravestones at a cemetery in Tsukigata, Hokkaido, had been discovered toppled on May 4th in what police suspect was a deliberate act of vandalism concentrating on a burial website for former prisoners courting again to the Meiji period.

Large stone markers lay scattered throughout the grounds as if that they had been forcibly pushed over, with some fully overturned together with their bases, presenting an uncommon and disturbing scene on the cemetery.

The incident was reported by a workers member managing the location, who alerted authorities that round 60 gravestones had been knocked down.

The cemetery part the place the injury occurred is called a “prisoner burial ground,” established through the Meiji interval to memorialize inmates who died in custody.

According to police, all 58 gravestones inside that part had been toppled, together with 12 that had been fully overturned from their foundations, whereas the remaining 46 had solely their higher stone parts knocked down.

Police imagine an unknown particular person or people entered the cemetery and intentionally overturned the gravestones, and are investigating the case on suspicion of property injury.
