A summer season spectacle is reaching its peak on the Heijo Palace Ruins, a World Heritage web site in Nara, as tens of 1000’s of swallows collect within the evening sky.
Each night after sundown, round 60,000 swallows could be seen swirling overhead, ultimately settling into their roosting web site and masking the sky above Nara City’s historic grounds.
The phenomenon, often known as “tsubame no negura-iri” or swallow roosting, happens when swallows—having completed elevating their younger—flock collectively in giant numbers for cover and spend the evening in reed beds and riverbanks. The peak season is in early August.
The roosting web site on the Heijo Palace Ruins is taken into account one of many largest in Japan. Visitors have been awestruck by the dimensions and great thing about the scene.
