Stolz and Kok declare world titles in 500m in Heerenveen

THE HAGUE, March 3 (Xinhua) — American Jordan Stolz and Dutch favourite Femke Kok captured the titles within the 500-meter sprints on the 2023 ISU World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships in Heerenveen, the Netherlands, on Friday.

The 18-year-old Stolz beat the sphere with 34.10 seconds to turn out to be the youngest-ever senior world champion. World Cup winner Laurent Dubreuil from Canada needed to accept silver with 34.46 and Wataru Morishige from Japan took the bronze in 34.48.

The 22-year-old Kok grew to become the first-ever Dutch girl to take the world champion in 500m. With her time of 37.28, she stayed forward of Vanessa Herzog from Austria (37.33) and compatriot Jutta Leerdam (37.54).

The Dutch girls have been unfortunate within the staff pursuit as they have been disqualified as a result of part of Joy Beune’s ankle was seen throughout the race. Canada gained the gold medal, Japan grabbed silver, the United States completed third and China needed to accept fourth place.

In the boys’s staff pursuit, the Dutch delighted the house crowd within the Thialf stadium by retaining their world title, however Marcel Bosker, Beau Snellink and Patrick Roest needed to go deep to beat Canada by simply 0.17 seconds. Olympic champions Norway took the bronze medal.
