Police urge cyclists to put on helmets forward of mandate on April 1

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department has begun urging cyclists to put on helmets earlier than a helmet-wearing mandate goes into impact nationwide on April 1.

Officers at Tsukishima Police Station in Tokyo’s Chuo Ward have been seen sporting bicycle helmets on Wednesday.

According to police, there have been over 13,000 accidents involving cyclists in Tokyo final 12 months, making up about 46% of visitors accidents within the metropolis, Kyodo News reported. This was a rise of over 1,000 instances from 2021.

Moreover, 30 cyclists have been killed. None of them have been sporting a helmet, police mentioned.
