TOKYO, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) — Sales at main supermarkets throughout Japan in 2024 rose 2.7 % year-on-year, pushed by value will increase for processed meals, rice, and greens, business information confirmed Thursday.
According to the Japan Chain Stores Association, the overall gross sales at roughly 9,400 main supermarkets nationwide reached over 13.03 trillion yen (about 83.2 billion U.S. {dollars}) in 2024.
Notably, gross sales of meals merchandise, which accounted for 70 % of whole gross sales, elevated 4.4 % year-over-year after continued value hikes for processed meals as a consequence of rising uncooked materials prices, in addition to greater retail costs for agricultural merchandise like rice and greens.
Meanwhile, the common variety of gadgets bought per buyer has been declining since autumn 2023. The affiliation attributes the pattern to shoppers’ rising give attention to saving in response to successive meals value hikes.
