JCG Halts AI-Generated Pamphlet

TOKYO, Apr 03 (News On Japan) –
The Japan Coast Guard has stopped distributing pamphlets containing illustrations created by generative AI following criticism that they may infringe copyright legal guidelines.

The pamphlets, aimed toward stopping maritime accidents, featured anime-style illustrations of girls generated by free AI software program to interact the youth. The Japan Coast Guard had despatched 50,000 copies to varied maritime security headquarters for distribution to fishermen and associated events.

After posting the pamphlet on social media and their web site, the Japan Coast Guard confronted criticisms, together with potential violations of copyright regulation, resulting in the choice to halt distribution.

The Japan Coast Guard acknowledged, “While not directly violating copyright laws, the potential for such cannot be denied. In light of ongoing debates about copyright, we’ve decided to suspend the use of the pamphlets at this stage.”

Under present copyright regulation, unauthorized studying by “generative AI” is usually permitted. However, creators are elevating considerations about rights infringement and calling for legislative amendments.
