Japan’s First Lunar Landing Mission: SLIM Enters Moon’s Circular Orbit at 600 km Altitude

TOKYO, Jan 15 (News On Japan) –
Japan’s Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) introduced on Monday that the unmanned spacecraft “SLIM,” geared toward Japan’s first lunar touchdown, has been positioned in a round orbit across the Moon at an altitude of 600 kilometers in preparation for touchdown.

The unmanned probe SLIM, developed by JAXA, is presently in orbit across the Moon.

According to JAXA, on Sunday night, SLIM adjusted its course and was efficiently positioned within the deliberate round orbit at an altitude of about 600 kilometers.

In the approaching days, it would progressively descend and start its ultimate descent from an altitude of 15 kilometers round midnight on January 20, trying to land on the Moon about 20 minutes later.

The mission goals to realize a touchdown accuracy inside 100 meters, which is lower than one-tenth the error margin of different international locations. If profitable, Japan will turn out to be the fifth nation on the earth to realize a lunar touchdown.
