Japan Jail Officers Lacked Sense of Human Rights

Nagoya Prison correctional officers who repeatedly assaulted inmates lacked a way of human rights, in line with a report by a third-party knowledgeable panel.

The panel, chaired by Toshio Nagai, former chief choose of the Osaka High Court, submitted its report on the assaults to Justice Minister Ken Saito on Wednesday, outlining the causes and placing ahead measures to handle the problem.

The report flagged a lack of knowledge of human rights amongst employees and stated efforts have to be made to stop recurrence at services throughout the nation.

The report summarized the issue as follows: “Young officers repeatedly engaged in what could be described as bullying and abusive behavior as an outlet for stress.”

From November 2021 to final September, 22 correctional officers on the jail have been answerable for greater than 400 acts of misconduct, together with slapping and threatening three male inmates of their 40s to 60s.
