Ahead of Disaster Preparedness Day on September 1, NTT West opened to reporters an underground cable-tunnel community in Osaka that helps town’s communications infrastructure. At its deepest level the tunnels run 40 meters under floor and home about 10 million fiber-optic traces and 6 million phone traces.
Spanning roughly 100 kilometers beneath Osaka Prefecture, the community is provided with fire- and waterproof doorways, flame-retardant cable covers constructed from supplies just like firefighters’ gear, and computerized drainage pumps. The covers are rated to resist temperatures of as much as 840°C, and the construction is designed to endure an earthquake with a seismic depth of seven on the Japanese scale.
For safety, the precise places are usually not disclosed and entry is restricted to a restricted variety of NTT Group workers. The amenities are inspected and renewed commonly to allow them to proceed working throughout disasters, underscoring the customarily unseen techniques that maintain communications operating.
