Guerrero returns to Peru squad for friendlies

LIMA, June 2 (Xinhua) — Former Bayern Munich striker Paolo Guerrero has been recalled to Peru’s squad for upcoming friendlies towards South Korea and Japan, the South American nation’s soccer federation stated on Friday.

The 39-year-old, who performs his membership soccer for Argentina’s Racing Club, has not represented his nation since October 2021 because of recurring knee issues.

Since coming back from his newest damage setback in January, Guerrero has made 17 appearances throughout all competitions for Racing, scoring three objectives and offering one help.

“Paolo does not need a letter of introduction or proof,” Peru supervisor Juan Reynoso advised a news convention. “He is coming here to be competitive because that’s all he knows. He has fought hard to get back in the squad.”

Guerrero, Peru’s all-time main scorer with 38 objectives in 107 worldwide matches, is one among solely two gamers over the age of 33 in Reynoso’s 25-man squad, the opposite being 37-year-old goalkeeper Jose Carvallo.

Peru will meet South Korea in Busan on June 16 and Japan in Suita 4 days later.
