‘Forest’ of carbon dioxide-sucking merchandising machines deliberate in Japan

TOKYO, May 12 (The Star) –
One of Japan’s main drinks makers is planning an unorthodox approach to minimize its carbon emissions, utilising a ubiquitous gadget within the nation: the merchandising machine.

The delicate drinks arm of Tokyo-based Asahi Group Holdings Ltd stated it plans to check out new machine subsequent month containing a cloth that “absorbs carbon dioxide” because it sucks in air to chill or heat the drinks inside.

Described by the corporate as a possible “forest within the metropolis,” the machines, that are being patented, will include a white powder-like materials produced from varied calcium minerals, which, as soon as it has absorbed a certain quantity of CO2 will then be used for industrial functions, corresponding to making fertiliser and algal sea beds.

The experiment, which is able to start with about 30 models put in within the Kanto and Kansai areas, is a part of an effort by the agency to realize carbon neutrality by 2050. Each machine is anticipated to soak up roughly 60 kilograms (132 kilos) of carbon dioxide – or 20% of the carbon emissions it produces – annually, based on firm spokesperson Yoshiie Horii.
