A overseas customer was filmed hanging from a torii gate at a preferred scenic spot in Ikeda, Osaka, referred to as the ‘Sky Torii,’ the place the town may be seen via the body of the gate. The footage exhibits a person doing pull-ups on the sacred gate whereas one other particular person filmed the act on a smartphone.
The incident, considered disrespectful and disruptive, was captured on video by Ilya, an Estonian resident touring in Japan.
Ilya, who shot the footage, mentioned: “I felt very uncomfortable seeing such disrespect toward the torii and thought I had to do something. I regret not shouting at them to stop. This is destructive behavior.”
The two people, believed to be overseas vacationers, gave the impression to be intentionally recording the act. The location, formally referred to as Shuho-dai Observatory, has gained reputation on-line as a photogenic website.
According to Ilya, the pair arrived by taxi and instantly started hanging from the gate, apparently meaning to publish the footage on social media reminiscent of Instagram or TikTok.
Ilya later took the video to the police station as proof. “I went to the police and explained the situation while showing them the video. The officers looked very disappointed,” he recalled.
Expressing concern in regards to the broader influence of such incidents, Ilya mentioned: “I worry that Japanese people may come to view all foreign tourists negatively. Please leave bad manners and behavior in your own country. Do not bring them to Japan.”
Ikeda City, which manages the torii, commented: “The torii is a sacred object, so please refrain from such acts,” and introduced it will strengthen patrols on the website.
