Former U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu and second-seeded Elise Mertens withdrew from the ASB Classic on Tuesday in Auckland, New Zealand.
Raducanu, who’s coping with a balky again, isn’t any stranger to accidents, having handled points involving her wrists, ankles and again over the previous couple of years.
The 22-year-old British participant was seeded sixth within the match and set to sq. off towards Robin Montgomery within the first spherical on Tuesday. Montgomery will face fortunate loser Mai Hontama of Japan as a substitute.
“Tried my best to be ready,” Raducanu stated. “I love Auckland and the fans here, but unfortunately I picked up a back niggle and won’t be ready in time.”
Raducanu gained her solely WTA Tour title thus far on the 2021 U.S. Open.
Mertens, 29, bowed out of the primary WTA 250 occasion of the season as a consequence of a proper ankle damage.
The Belgian will probably be changed by Jodie Burrage of Great Britain, who will face New Zealand wild card Vivian Yang.
