Beloved whale shark ‘Hachibei’ dies in quake-hit aquarium

Ishikawa, Jan 10 (News On Japan) –
A whale shark that captured the hearts of tourists to Notojima Aquarium has died in captivity following the devastating Ishikawa earthquake.

‘Hachibei’ was one among two whale sharks that had been on show on the aquarium situated in Nanao City, Ishikawa, since September 2022.

The latest earthquake triggered extreme shaking in Nanao City, with an depth of 6+, leading to a lower within the water stage of the whale shark’s tank, submersion of the circulation pump, and a halt within the filtration system.

‘Hachibei’ was not seen swimming since January seventh, and her dying was confirmed round midday on Tuesday.

The Notojima Aquarium is desperately exploring all potential measures to save lots of the opposite whale shark, ‘Haku’.
