Also often known as the widespread banded mosquito, the Culex annulirostris is native to the Pacific and is a provider of arboviruses, together with Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV).

Earlier in 2022, the federal authorities declared JEV a “communicable disease incident of national significance” amid an outbreak within the nation’s south-east.
