Australia returns Ainu stays to Japan after 80 years

Australia on Saturday returned to Japan 4 units of indigenous Ainu stays, greater than 80 years since they had been despatched to the Pacific nation for analysis functions.

The Japanese authorities has been stepping up efforts to convey again the stays of the indigenous ethnic group from Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost essential island, which had been collected — generally by excavating tombs — for research in anthropology and different fields.

The stays, all skulls, had been handed over to representatives of the Japanese authorities and Ainu-related teams in a ceremony at Melbourne Museum.

Masaru Okawa, who leads the Ainu Association of Hokkaido, informed reporters later that he hopes to carry a memorial ceremony for the stays, saying they will need to have “felt very lonely” after being taken out of Japan for analysis functions.

Inquiries by each nations discovered that researchers despatched the stays to Australia between 1911 and 1936, together with Yoshikiyo Koganei, an anatomist and anthropologist recognized for his Ainu research and for being a professor emeritus at Tokyo Imperial University, which is now the University of Tokyo.
