A rice scarcity is affecting a number of areas in Japan, extending past only a poor harvest to a uniquely Japanese scenario. The value of rice has elevated by 2,000 yen per 50kg, which may drive away clients.

A survey at retail shops nationwide revealed that 19% of shops could not procure rice, and 66% reported lower-than-usual portions. This scarcity can also be affecting households, with supermarkets in Kanagawa Prefecture and Tokyo exhibiting empty rice cabinets and notices about unstable provide.
