A Myanmar military tribunal on Thursday sentenced Japanese documentary filmmaker Toru Kubota to an additional three years in prison for violating immigration laws.
Kubota on Oct. 5 was sentenced to seven years for violating Myanmar’s electronic transaction law and three years for incitement, to be served concurrently. With the latest ruling, he is set to serve a total of 10 years in prison.
Kubota, 26, had entered Myanmar in July to film a documentary. He was detained on July 30 after filming protests against the military, which took control of Myanmar in February 2021, and is currently being held at Insein Prison in Yangon.
