HOKKAIDO –
A mountaineering path on Mount Rausu in Shiretoko, Hokkaido, reopened on July 5 after being closed since final August following a deadly brown bear assault on a climber.
The path had been shut after a hiker was attacked and killed by a brown bear on the 1,660-meter mountain. At the Iwaobetsu trailhead in Shari, a ceremony was held to mark the opening of the climbing season, with about 50 folks, together with city officers and hikers, praying for security.
